Lesson 17 – Reactions of Alcohols

There are three types of alcohol: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary

Primary (at the end of a chain):

primary alcohol

When oxidized under distillation they form Aldehydes

aldehyde

When oxidized under reflux they form Carboxylic Acidcarboxylic acid

Secondary (middle of chain):

secondary alcohol

When oxidized under reflux they form Ketones

ketone

Tertiary:

tertiary alcohol

Tertiary alcohols do not oxidize
